Understanding that pet ownership is a responsibility that comes with a financial cost, there are times when the costs can exceed nearly any families’ budgets.  Issue of money and medical care can quickly become emotionally charged, especially when we feel “trapped” between ability to pay and the needs of our pets.  When medical cost become a challenge it is important to find options and means to meet the needs of our pets.

A wonderful resource for addressing medical costs is presented in by RedRover and their Webpage titled “Fundraising Tools, Tips and Resources”  In this article, they discuss in a step-wise fashion how to approach financial issues.

  • Prevention – First and foremost, prevention is the key to promoting and providing a healthy environment. The old adage “an ounce of prevention it worth a pound of cure” is absolutely applicable when it comes to taking care of our pets – vaccination, parasite protection, annual examination… are all important in protecting against higher costs of care.
  • “Be upfront” – letting your veterinarian know any financial limits and exploring options while still preserving an acceptable quality of life.
  • Take action – asking for help is always difficult but if it can make a difference in getting the care needed, people are willing to support.  Again there are several great suggestion in the article for making “the ask.”
