Responsible Pet Ownership – No one said it would be easy
Serving as an organization supporting a mission “to provide medical care for stray and disadvantaged pets,” we receive dozens of request each week for assistance. The stories shared are often heart wrenching and understandably difficult for the families seeking care for their beloved pet.
The requests for support are varied and obviously all related to challenges in meeting the cost for care. Unfortunately and all too often the requests we receive are from individuals lacking the ability to even cover the cost of an examination, leads to the question of how even basic needs of the pet can be met? This brings us to a very touchy subject and the very definition of what is a responsible pet owner. It is not the intention here to be judgmental but rather providing a set of guidelines establishing the responsibilities of being a good steward.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has developed a helpful document to not only address the basic guidelines for responsible pet ownership but also carries the message of promoting a healthy and safe environment for our pets – Pet Ownership (provided below). We are providing the flyers as an illustration for anyone having or considering taking on the responsibility of having a pet and providing a loving home.
